Matthew Sweet stunned both critics and audiences back in 1991 whenhe released the Mega-hit album Girlfriend, and has continued to build arabid fan base with his subsequent releases, 100% Fun, and Blue Sky on Mars. Now he is back with a new album, and it is being touted as his best workto date. Recorded with over a dozen musicians in a Phil Spector "wallof sound" concept, Matthew Sweet in Reverse, hits you like a tidalwave.
His straight ahead rock and roll guitar riffs and left-over reverbplay perfect compliment to his alter-ego ballads, and his sense of humornever eclipses his sense of music.
Watch him give a brief interview and play a short set that includessongs from Altered Beast and Girlfriend.
The notorious Onion AV Club askedMatthew an interesting question. Read on!
Matthew Sweet is a pop-rock singer-songwriter whose newest album istitled In Reverse.
The Onion: Who could you take in a fight?
Matthew Sweet: [Laughs.] Gee, that's a hard one to answer.I don't know exactly what the angle is. Who could I take in a fight? AnyoneI was angry enough at to really want to. But I'm a lover, not a fighter.
Matthew's performance at the Theatre of the Living Arts in Philadelphia,PA tonight will webcast LIVE. Here's the link (thanks Beckie!):

As all of you (or most of you) know, Linda and I put together The UglyTruth, The Matthew Sweet Fanzine. We've put out 3 issues so far, and eachone has been more successful and reached more people than the one beforeit. Unfortunately, our success has meant we've reached a point where itwill be difficult to maintain our current setup. You see, with our firstissue we had about 70 subscribers, our second had 160. This last issue wentto approximately 250 people. And we're adding more daily. I print the fanzinefrom my own printer at home, I buy all the materials, and I take care ofthe "shipping and handling." Now, I make a DAMN good salary, butfrankly, the bottom line is that I'm a single mom living in the 3rd mostexpensive county in the country and I simply can't afford this anymore.
I can't afford to produce hard copy of the fanzine free anymore, norcan I charge for the fanzine. Legally, it would be too much of a hassledealing with the copyright and trademark issues (You recall The Artist'ssuing his fanzine) and for all my bluster, I have enough problems in mylife without worrying about getting sued. Morally, I would not feel rightcharging anyone for something that is fan-based and produced out of lovefor a musician we all respect and admire. In my ideal world, Matthew wouldbe a mega-platinum artist and we'd be officially sanctioned and sponsoredby his label and management. But this is far from my ideal world, and weare just tolerated at this point by his people.
Does this mean the end of the fanzine? No. Contributors to the fanzine(and that includes people who submit letters and classifieds) will stillreceive the fanzine hard copy at no charge. The fanzine will still be archivedand maintained online at members.aol.com/sweetezine.Linda and I still hope you folks continue to contribute and keep the fanzinegoing. I know I speak for Linda when I say we feel the fanzine has improvedwith each issue, and we plan on making it better and better.
