One of the main reasons "What Matters" has had very littleairplay so far is due to the fact that the song didn't start going for radiostation adds until Oct 5...(which was yesterday...) Competing for adds forthe first time this week along with "What Matters" are FionnaApple, Rage Against The Machine and Semisonic. Radio stations should nowbe more receptive to requests. One of the advertisements for "WhatMatters" includes a pencil drawing of a crying eye with a large tearunderneath it.

A foo radio station Program Directors have listed "What Matters"as one of their favorite songs among the new alternative music:

Do you know What Matters?

On September 21, the first single from In Reverse, "What Matters,"will be released to radio stations in the U.S. (but not commercially). "WhatMatters" has the potential to be a big single - we need to make itthat. So, folks, here's the web address of my local radio station: http://www.whfs.com/ (FM Washington). They havea request form - you click "On Air" then "Requests"from the main frame. On September 21, please take a moment to request "WhatMatters." Make sure to put your distinct info in there (they say thatduplicate requests are deleted from their server - I think this means youcan't request something repeatedly yourself on the same day. But I thinkyou can do this every day (which I plan on doing on top of calling themup).

If your radio station has similar information, please email it to meand I'll post it here. Let's jam the requests lines across the nation!

Rumors

Not too long ago, a rumor surfaced on imusic and the Mailing List regardinga new album by Matthew...

Matthew Sweet is coming back. He has a new album coming out in March.I think the final title he's chosen is "From Now On We Walk Alone."The songs sound a lot like his "Girlfriend" music. Rik Menck isplaying drums again, along with Richard Lloyd on guitar for a few of thesongs. Fred Maher (the drummer for the studio recording of "Girlfriend")makes an appearance as well on a song called "Painful Discharge."It's gonna be great. E-mail me at insidearth@hotmail.com for more information.Sincerely, Insidearth

The first warning bells sounded off at the mention of Girlfriend. Now, I have nothing against Girlfriend...it was the first releaseof Matthew's I bought, the one that got me into his music. However, aftercoming across too many silly observations that it was his "best"work, or that such-and-such a release was either "as good," "betterthan," or "nothing compared to" that release, I've grownto be annoyed with the DAMNED obsession with Girlfriend. IMHO, Girlfriendis good, but Altered Beast and Son of Altered Beast are genius, and 100% Fun and Blue Sky on Mars are gems, not to mentionthe countless B-Sides & Demos of Matthew's that are brilliant. Anyway...inthe context the above "poster [poseur]?" used Girlfriend, he/she/itstruck me as some punk who ONLY owns Girlfriend and is screwing around withthe hopes of Matthew's genuine fans.

The second suspicion came from "Painful Discharge." There isno diatribe necessary to comment on THAT!

Yet, I was hopeful that there was SOME validity to it, because, well,I would like a new album! So I tried to verify it...Don't bother emailingthat address because you'll get no reply! Perhaps it's some scam to harvestemail addys, who knows??

Finally, Scott Byron dispelled it for me in a response to an email Isent him:

Sounds like a total, utter fiction to me. As far as I know, recording hasn't even started yet. And there was no song by that title among the demos I've heard. As I said, don't believe the rumors you read on the internet. Always have a verifiable source.

The good news is, yes, you read correctly, Scott has heard actual demos! Therefore, I'm crossing my fingers that an album in 1999 is forthcoming!
